Spicy, dry cookies, not too sweet, excellent with coffee or tea. They were brought to this country by German settlers.
4 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cloves
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
4-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon white pepper
5 large eggs
3 ounces citron, chopped
Peel of 1 lemon, grated
Sift together dry ingredients. Add eggs, citron, and lemon peel and mix well. Chill thoroughly. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Roll dough into 1-1/2-inch balls. Bake on greased cookie sheet about 20 minutes. If desired, press half a cherry into each cookie before baking.
