No commercial mix can match this delicious old spice cake.
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup lard (scant)
1 egg, beaten
1 cup raisins
1-1/2 cups bread flour
I teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 rounded teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon nutineg
1 cup sour cream or sour milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cream together the lard and the sugar and add the beaten egg. Cover the raisins with cold water and simmer until the water is gone. Cool. Meantime, add the flour which has been sifted with the baking powder; soda, salt, and spices alternately with the sour cream or sour milk to the sugar mixture. Add the raisins and vanilla and turn into a greased 8-inch square pan and bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F) for about 35 minutes. Frost with Seven-Minute frosting.
