I like to pay extra attention to the small details around my home. Often, I find there is great beauty in the details. Take the lowly light switch plate, for example. They often come in repelling shades of beige, and although small and unassuming, they tend to be a bit of an eyesore. But with a little bit of patterned fabric or paper, you can easily turn these eyesores into something pretty . . .and it only takes about 10 minutes (plus drying time)!
Materials for creating decorative light switch covers:
Plain switch plate
Modge Podge
Scissors
Single edge blade
Fabric or paper
Pencil
Instructions for how to make a decorative light switch plate cover:
Lay your switch plate on a piece of fabric or paper, and trace along the outside edge in pencil. Also trace the small inner rectangle (where the light switch pokes through).
With a straight edge, measure one inch from your outer line, and draw another line. At each corner, cut a slit from the very outer pencil line, to the second pencil line. This will help your corners fold without bunching.
With your single edge blade, cut an ‘X’ inside the smallest rectangle (where the light switch pokes through).
Now take your switch plate and coat the right side with a thin layer of Modge Podge. Lay it onto the fabric, with the correct lines matching up with the correct edges. Flip the switch plate so that the back is facing you, and smooth over the flaps, adhering them to the back of the switch plate with Modge Podge.
Fold in the small flaps where the light switch hole is, and secure with Modge Podge.
Now, with your fabric/paper in place, coat the entire front and back with a hearty layer of Modge Podge (this gives the surface a nice, shiny, hard coat, and when dry, secures your fabric/paper to the switch plate).
