This week on Weekends with Yankee, senior food editor Amy Traverso dives into early American history at New Hampshire’s Strawbery Banke Museum. After talking with archaeologist Alexandra Martin about this unique history museum—an authentic neighborhood whose buildings span four centuries—Amy tries her hand at cooking Chelsea buns and onion pie in the 18th-century style: over an open hearth.
Adventurer Richard Wiese is also in the Granite State, where he gets in on the action at Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby, a 44-year-old tradition in which anglers compete for the biggest catch and thousands in prize money. He learns to erect a bob house and carve a fishing hole in the ice, and meets anglers and families who’ve taken part in this community event for years.
Finally, we head west to Vermont to experience the thrills and learn the story of the Harris Hill Ski Jump in Brattleboro.
