A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the woman who wrote to me to tell me of the demise of Spencer’s Shad Shack. She had been to visit and she had taken photos and then she went by again and saw the dozer poised to push it over. And I wrote a plea to everyone to take photos of their towns, their favorite sights and scenes because they will not be there forever. But, apparently, Spencer’s Shad Shack is still standing. She wrote back to me, and several others wrote to me as well, to say that the dozer lives there, beside the shad shack. So it wasn’t doing anything there except resting. No malice intent. A reprieve is always a good thing to have to report. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could say that about so many other favorite places that have disappeared for all the many reasons that landmarks fall? I still want to urge everyone to take photos and be sure to identify them, keep them in a safe place and if you have a historical society in your town, keep them in mind with your treasures if you think they are of value to the town. Generations ahead will thank you.
