Made with tart apples, spices, and fresh breadcrumbs, this old-fashioned apple brown betty recipe is a fall favorite.
4 tart apples, peeled and cored
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon allspice
juice and zest of half a lemon
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided, plus more for the baking dish
6 slices of sandwich bread, cut into small cubes or torn into small pieces
4 tablespoons hot apple cider (or hot water)
Preheat the oven to 350°F and generously grease a 9-inch square pan or baking dish with butter.
Place the breadcrumbs in a medium bowl. In a small saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of the butter and pour over the breadcrumbs. Toss to coat and set aside.
Cut the apples into thin slices or 1-inch chunks. In a large bowl, sprinkle the apples with the sugar, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, lemon juice and zest. Toss to combine.
Sprinkle a half-cup of the breadcrumbs into the bottom of the baking dish. Cover evenly with half of the apples, then half of the reamining breadcrumbs. Repeat, adding the last of the apples and finish with a crust of crumbs. Pour the hot apple cider (or water) over the dish, cover with foil, and bake for 45 minutes. Uncover the dish for the last 10 minutes. Serve apple brown betty hot with hard sauce or fresh whipped cream.
