Submission Guidelines for Writers and Photographers

About Us: Yankee covers all six New England states — Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont — with an emphasis on what is happening in the region today. Writers interested in working with us are strongly advised to read several current issues of Yankee before querying us. Also: Read editor Mel Allen’s advice on how to break into writing for Yankee. Queries: Yankee welcomes professional, detailed pitches for longer reported narratives (3,000–5,000 words) as well as for shorter features related to home, food, or travel. We also will consider personal essays related to the New England experience, especially essays of 600-800 words. We do not accept poetry, fiction, or cartoons. Email submissions are preferred: Please include “submission” in the subject line, and include links to your other published work. Yankee buys all rights to stories it purchases. Payment is made on acceptance of the article by the assignment editor and with the writer’s submitted invoice. Photography and Art: We give assignments to experienced professionals. Contact our photo editor, Heather Marcus, before sending any photography or artwork to us. 603-563-8118, ext. 192
